SAE Visit #2: Brynn at Renco Ace Hardware

For my second SAE visit during my student-teaching, I went out to 10th grader Brynn Karnes' placement SAE project at her family-owned hardware store. Brynn works at ACE Renco Hardware, which is owned and operated by her family, but affiliated with Ace Hardware. Brynn is an excellent student who always goes above and beyond inside and outside of the classroom. She started working at her family's business when she was 15, and she now has been employed for a year and a half or so. She chose this placement project as her SAE when she joined the Ag Science I course at Central Columbia during her freshman year.

Before the visit, I contacted Brynn to determine her work schedule during the week of August 14th. Once I knew that she would be working the register during the day shift on Wednesday the 16th, I scheduled the visit and went over to Renco with Mr. Brown. We always take a look at AET and see what responsibilities and journal entries the students have placed into their projects so we have an idea of what they will be doing during the visit. We also take a look at her SAE agreement to refresh ourselves on her responsibilities so that we can address these when we speak with the store manager that the agreement was made.

While Brynn is at the hardware store, she is responsible for working the register, interacting with and assisting customers, restocking shelves, and taking inventory. Mr. Brown and I watched Brynn complete transactions with customers, and then she had to go to the measuring equipment section of the store and take inventory of tape measures, rulers, micrometers, and many other types of measuring equipment. She keeps track of these tasks that she completes in AET, right along with all of her financial entries in which she enters her paychecks. Lastly, we meet with her boss, and we discuss her strengths and weaknesses as an employee. Luckily, with Brynn, we know that she does a great job and will continue to grow and come out of her "shell" as she gets more comfortable working with others and communicating. She did a great job as a Creed Speaker for the FFA chapter last year and is excited to write a speech for Junior Prepared this year. Her experience with her SAE will only help her develop her speaking/communication skills.
