Welcome to Mr. Shunk's Class: My First Day Lesson Snapshot
This week in #AEE412 lab, the cohort got to test their first-day lesson planning skills by formulating a lesson plan and then performing a 10-minute snapshot of our lesson in our lab section. I decided to develop my lesson plan first, and then I would choose the lesson section I wanted to try out. I landed on performing an activity that I enjoyed when I was in high school, which was a quick nametag activity that asked students to come up with 2 truths and 1 lie about themselves. After this, I had each student go around and share their statements, and the rest of the class would try and decipher which statement is a lie. This worked pretty well, and it gave the students and me some information about each of the students in the class. This activity then led to my discussion about the classroom expectations that I have for the students in my class.
The expectations that I established with the class were the following:
- Respect Others
- Participation in Class
- Give Your Best Effort
- Speak Up!
- Make Mistakes
I shared these as my expectations of my students, and I feel strongly about these things because I believe these are characteristics of a classroom with a positive learning environment. One thing that I could have done better during my lesson was to involve the students in this portion of the lesson. I could have done this by having them "think-pair-share" about what they thought each expectation meant to them, and then had them share their ideas and definitions. I feel as if this would have given my students a much more interactive experience. The best part about this is I can note it in my lesson plan for future reference and change it up when I get to my first day of student teaching!
I found that this lab was not super difficult to develop, but it did take a little bit of preparation and I found myself making a slideshow all bout myself, which is kind of interesting to do sometimes. I think the first day of school is very important in establishing a safe and productive environment in your classroom for the entire year. The best part is that each of the members in the cohort has their own way of doing things or putting their own individualized spins on certain activities. I think that was ultimately my biggest takeaway from this experience, and I can't wait to teach again and continue to grow as an educator!

Baylor, I enjoyed reading your reflection of your lesson this week. I like that your expectations are short, sweet, and simple this will allow for students to have a clear understanding of them. It is also super encouraging that you are excited to teach and grow as an educator.
ReplyDeleteBaylor,
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed being a student in your lesson. It was nice that you did the activity with your students, that way they got to know more about you as well. I agree that it can be interesting to create a slideshow about yourself. It can be hard to decide what to include and what not to include as the teacher. Great job this week.
Baylor,
ReplyDeleteYou had so much enthusiasm during your lesson! It was great getting to learn more about our cohort as we sat in as your students. I really enjoyed your expectations, I think they highlight who you want to be as a teacher. Great job!
Hey Baylor,
ReplyDeleteI totally agree about being exciting to actually take our lessons to the classroom and after teaching it in lab, it becomes much more exciting! I also think it is so cool to see that each and everyone of us did completely different activities, but that they were all very effective. I really liked doing the 2 truth and 1 lie when I was in school and you did a great job with it in your lesson, so I think the students will really enjoy learning about each-other through this game like activity! Great work!
